Born to Ghanaian parents in Archway, London, Reggie Yates began his show business career at the age of eight, appearing in the television comedy Desmond's, and in cult BBC children's serial drama Grange Hill. He is best known as a BBC Radio 1 DJ and for his work on television programmes The Voice UK, Top of the Pops and Doctor Who. Since 2011, he has established himself as an award-winning documentary film-maker for the BBC, with subjects including teenage gangs, and homosexuality and religion in Russia. His most recent documentary, Reggie Yates: Searching for Grenfell’s Lost Lives (2018), prioritised the stories of the Grenfell residents over the political debate that has consumed the British media since the tragedy. His first short film, Patriarch, was aired on Channel 4 in 2013, and his second short, Date Night starring Daniel Kaluuya, won Best UK Short Film at the London Independent Film Festival. His 2017 memoir Unseen: My Journey tells the behind-the-scenes story of his documentary-making. He is a long-standing supporter of Comic Relief, regularly hosting the biennial live television show.
