Peter Thwaites was the son of Colonel Norman Thwaites, CBE, MVO, MC, formerly of the 4th Dragoon Guards, soldier, intelligence officer, foreign correspondent, editor, and diplomat and Eleanor Lucia Whitridge, a granddaughter of Matthew Arnold.

The picture was taken when he was a Lt-Colonel (1967) but before promotion to full Colonel (1971). He is shown wearing his medals when commanding the Muscat Regiment in 1967-69. Decorations include War Medal, General Service Medals for Malaya, South (sic) Arabia, Coronation Medal and Sultan's Bravery Medal. From memory, it was taken in 1970.

Peter Thwaites was the younger son and youngest child of Norman Thwaites MC, officer in an Irish cavalry Regiment and specialist in military intelligence in WW1, and of Ellen Wgitridge, Mathew Arnold's grand daughter. He joined the Grenadier Guards, was sent to the Castle Guard Company at Windsor, served in Germany, Egypt, London, He then commanded the Muscat Regiment in Oman, returned to the regiment to serve in Singapore and later returned to Muscat as Chairman of the Sultan's Joint Staff. Working with Charles Ross, he wrote a number of plays, two of them played in the West End
A keen polo player, he was chairman of the Guards Polo Club and for the last ten years of his life he was chairman of the Hurlingham Polo Association, the global association for the control of the game and its rules.

Peter Thwaites married Jacqueline Inchbald (nee Bromley).

Brigadier Peter Trevenen Thwaites died in 1991, and was married to Jacqueline Ann Duncan/Whitaker/Inchbald. Have just started a Wikipedia page about her, mostly based on Who's Who.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacqueline_Ann_Duncan
