A career diplomat. He entered the Diplomatic Service in 1936, and was posted to Tokyo (1939); Cairo (1945); Madrid (1948), before becoming a Counsellor at the Foreign Office (1951) and British Embassy in Bonn (1955); appointed HM Ambassador to Amman (1956), Governor and Commander-in-Chief in Aden (1960-63); High Commander for Aden and the Protectorate of South.
