Campbell served in India, Burma, the Mediterranean, the West Indies and Canada before being posted to the Crimea in March, 1854, where he was present at the Alma and Inkerman. On 18 June 1855, contrary to orders and sending away Captain Hume, he courageously, but rashly, led a storming party on the Redan and was killed instantly.
