Pennie Smith

(1949-), Photographer

Artist of 12 portraits
Born in London, Smith went to Twickenham Art school in the late 1960s to study Graphics and Fine Art. She worked on Friendz magazine with Barney Bubbles and Nick Kent, her first major commission being to cover an early 1970s tour of Led Zeppelin. Smith worked on The NME as a staff photographer until the early 1980s, becoming something of an icon herself and influencing a younger generation of photographers. In 1980 she published a bestselling book The Clash, Before and After. She lives and works in the railway station she bought and converted whilst a student, and freelances in black and white reportage.
