Haleh Afshar, Baroness Afshar

Iranian-born Haleh Afshar was Emeritus Professor of Politics and Women's Studies at the University of York, and served as a cross-bench life peer in the House of Lords. A prominent Muslim feminist, she characterised herself as a socialist and a Shia muslim. She first moved to Britain at the age of 14 to attend boarding school, despite not knowing how to speak English at the time. She attended university in the UK before returning to Iran where she worked as a civil servant and as a journalist. She wrote extensively on Iran and Iranian politics and served as Deputy Chair of the British Council's Gender and Development Task Force. She was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to equal opportunities and was made a baroness two years later.
