John d Green was renowned for producing a book with the confusing title of “Birds of Britain”. The dust wrapper was a close-up photograph of Samantha Juste’s face with a Union Flag painted beetle on her nose. The contents were a number of striking 60s-style photographs of models, singers, young ‘debs’, if such a thing existed, and a lady curiously coated in what appeared to be engine sump oil. This was a large picture book for the legendary coffee table, published in 1967 by The Bodley Head Press at three guineas. Each photograph was accompanied by a description which today makes little sense. But in fact the whole book is a Swinging Sixties treasure. As far as I can ascertain John d Green did not repeat or progress any further in the publications stakes but this masterpiece allows no improvement.
