Festing has been exhibiting since 1968 and a full time portrait painter since 1980. Festing has undertaken many prestigious commissions including HM the Queen, Lord Carrington, HRH The Duke of Kent, and, for the National Portrait Gallery, Lord Wolfson (2000). He was elected President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 2002.
