Pierre-Étienne Falconet (1741-1791), Portrait painter
Artist associated with 34 portraits
Parisian-born Falconet moved to London in around 1765 to train with Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, and contributed forty pictures to their exhibitions from 1767 to 1773. Falconet is best known for a set of portraits of eminent artists that he produced in 1768-9. Drawn in profile in black lead, with a slight tint of colour on the cheeks, they include portraits of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir William Chambers, Francis Cotes, George Stubbs and many others.
