Musician, pioneer of brass chamber music; principal trumpet in each of the major London orchestras in succession through the 1950s and 60s; founder, in 1951, of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble which initially worked with early music choirs, but increasingly commissioned, or was offered, compositions from leading contemporary composers, giving 87 world premieres; Principal, Trinity College of Music 1988-94.
