Born William Mitchell in London, Finch was brought up in Australia and made his film debut in 1938. In 1949 Finch travelled back to London as a protégé of Laurence Olivier. By the mid 1950s Finch emerged as one of Britain's leading stars and won Best Actor Academy Awards for his performances in A Town Like Alice (1956), The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960), No Love for Johnnie (1961) and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). Finch died shortly after the completion of his last film Network (1976), for which he was awarded a posthumous Best Actor Academy Award.
