Aga Khan III (Mohammed Shah)

(1877-1957), Leader of the Ismailis and racehorse owner

Sitter in 20 portraits
Born in Karachi (then British India and now Pakistan), Khan became the 48th Imam of the Shia Ismaili community, succeeding his father at just eight years old. Under the care of his mother, Khan received a well-rounded Islamic, eastern and western education, later attending Eton and Cambridge University. As a young man, he began dealing with the affairs of his community and in 1906 became a founding member and the first President of the All-India Muslim League, which promoted Muslim agendas and sought protection for Muslims rights in India. Khan was a proponent of Muslims achieving their vision of an independent state in what was to become Pakistan as well as an advocate for educational reforms in the subcontinent. He was also well-known as an owner and breeder of thoroughbred racehorses.
