Alexander Browne

(active 1659-died 1706), Artist, publisher, printseller, auctioneer and dealer

Sitter in 4 portraits
Artist associated with 149 portraits
Alexander Browne was a significant figure in the late seventeenth century art scene in London. He was variously a 'practitioner of the art of limning', a drawing master (to Elizabeth Pepys from 1665, among others), an author of a drawing manual and treatise on art, an art auctioneer and dealer, a print publisher (especially of 'mezo tinto') and printseller. His shop at 'ye Blew Balcony' in Little Queen Street would have contained quantities of prints, books and artists materials. Browne published around 100 mezzotints, mainly after Sir Anthony van Dyck and Sir Peter Lely, and was granted in 1684 a privilege or Royal License for 'the sole printing and publishing' of his plates for fourteen years.
