From 1808 to 1823, he was a principal engraver for William Otley's three-volume work on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. He contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner's Liber Studiorum, as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman. Lewis was the father of engraver Charles George Lewis.
