Frederick Spencer Chapman
(1907-1971), Explorer, mountaineer, jungle warfare expert and authorSitter in 11 portraits
Mountaineer, author, soldier and schoolmaster. Chapman took part in expeditions to the Arctic (1930-1, 1933), and the Himalayas, including a successful attempt on Chomolhari in Tibet (1937). During the Second World War he became an expert in guerilla tactics, spending over three years behind Japanese lines and earning a DSO and Bar.
