Henry Redhead Yorke was born in March 1772, the son of a wealthy Antiguan plantation owner and agent for the Codrington family in Antigua and Barbuda. Yorke's mother was a slave whose freedom was purchased by Yorke's father, though they never married. Yorke was of African/British descent, raised in a slave society on Barbuda until sent to England to be educated as a gentleman aged six. He then had engaged in extra-parliamentary politics in Britain and after a trip to Paris in 1792 became a revolutionary radical in Britain. He was imprisoned for his politics in 1794 and on release from prison he changed political direction and became a loyalist, supporting the government in the face of a potential invasion in the Napoleonic wars with France. Throughout his life, Yorke received income from property in Antigua bequeathed to him by his father in 1785 and hence he benefited from legacies of slave ownership. His family continued to benefit from such legacies in England and the last surviving male in the family line died in 1987.
