John Gale Jones

John Gale Jones was a member of the London Corresponding Society (LCS), founded in 1792 by a small group of reformers inspired by the French Revolution. Its political objectives were universal male suffrage and annual parliaments. In 1795, during the government backlash against radical activity, Jones and fellow LCS member John Binns, made a famous tour of the country visiting rural reform societies. Their main purpose was to explain how people could evade the repressive 'Two Acts'; the Treasonable Practices Act and the Seditious Meetings Act which had both been passed earlier that year.
