Richard Tompson
(died 1693), Publisher, printseller, auctioneer and dealerSitter in 2 portraits
Artist associated with 116 portraits
With Alexander Browne, Richard Tompson played a pivotal role in the development of the English mezzotint. They were the first publishers to issue large runs of mezzotints of distinct quality and format and in an organised manner. Tompson himself was not a printmaker, and his plates were made by engravers including Jan Van Somer, Jan Van der Vaart and Robert Williams. In 1669 Tompson co-published with Browne the latter's Ars pictorial, a treatise on art combining art theory and practical instructions. From 1674, the two men were also partners in what was probably the first art auctioneering business in London.
