Henry Arthur Fletcher was born on 20 April 1843, the son of Charles William Fletcher, Board of Control, India Office. Educated privately, he was appointed a Cornet in the Bengal Cavalry on 4 September 1860, becoming Lieutenant in in the 6th Bengal Cavalry in July 1862. He served on the North West Frontier of India in 1863-64, including the affair of Shabkadar (medal and clasp). Promoted to Captain in February 1873, he became a Squadron Commander in October 1879, Major in September 1880, and served in the Egyptian War of 1882 with the 6th Bengal Cavalry (medal and bronze star). He became Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1886 and retired from the Army in 1889. He was appointed to the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms on 16 May 1892, becoming Adjutant and Clerk of the Cheque of that Corps in 1900, which appointments he held until 1920, when he became Standard Bearer. In 1922 he was appointed Lieutenant of the Honourable Corps. Fletcher was made a C.V.O. in 1909 and was knighted in 1919. He died on 24 December 1925.
