Artist of 1 portrait
Born in Birmingham, Wearing trained at Goldsmith's College. Signs that say what you want them to say not signs that say what someone else wants you to say 1992-3, was not only a hit with the art world but also with that of advertising where her ideas were recycled. This type of collaborative work was a template for other investigations into tensions between public and private behaviour. In 1997, Wearing won the Turner Prize and in 2007 was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
