Brought up in Düsseldorf, Milein Cosman moved to London in 1939 and studied drawing and printmaking at the Slade. After the War she began freelance drawing for newspapers and magazines, specialising in figures from the world of music and dance. She was also a prolific book illustrator and made a series of school programmes on drawing for ITV in the late 1950s.
