Director of Historical Buildings, National Trust since 1995. Began his museum career at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery in 1964. In 1966 he joined the Department of Furniture at the Victoria & Albert Museum. From 1990 until 1995 he was the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Publications include Victorian Furniture (1968), High Victorian Design (1983) and The Penguin Dictionary of Design and Designers (1984).
