Influential Japanese writer of poetry, fiction, essays, and literary criticism in both English and Japanese. Encountering eastern and western literature at the University in Tokyo he left before graduating to travel. Arriving in San Francisco in 1893 he worked as a journalist on a newspaper associated with the Freedom and People's Rights Movement founded by Japanese exiles. A visit to the house of American poet Joaquin Miller led to his introduction to the bohemian scene in San Francisco Bay after which he wrote his first verses of poetry. His books include The American Diary of a Japanese Girl (1902) and its sequel The American Letters of a Japanese Parlour Maid (1905). His American editor and lover Leonie Gilmour was mother to his illegitimate son, one of the twentieth century's most important and critically acclaimed sculptors, Isamu Noguchi.
