He went to Spain in 1936 to photograph the 'alternative Olympics'. He was caught up in the start of the Spanish Civil War and joined the International Brigade and was wounded. He was captured and was sent to the Gurs internment camp in south-west France. He escaped from there and made his way to England and joined the Free Czech Army in England.

Dezider (Dezo) Hoffmann, my father, was born in Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia (originally Selmecbanya, Hungary) on May 24th 1912. I have his birth certificate. He died on March 29th 1986 in London.
