Thomas Charles John
(circa 1872-1936), Assistant Bishop on the NigerSitter in 1 portrait
John was born in Lokoja, Nigeria and Studied at Fourah Bay College, Freetown and the University of Durham (1883-4). Ordained in 1902, he became Principal of the CMS Grammar School, Freetown 1920 until 1933, Canon of St George's Cathedral, Freetown in 1924 and sub-Dean in 1929. Consecrated as Assistant Bishop of the Niger in Lambeth Chapel in May 1933. As early as 1765, Africans and West Indians came to London to be ordained as priests in the Church of England. As their numbers and seniority increased, they came to be consecrated as Bishops.
