Educated in South Africa and Balliol College, Oxford. Married Ruth Williams, an English woman in 1948 causing him to be banned from the chieftainship and the territory of the Bamangwato. Allowed to return in 1956, he became active in politics and was restored to the chieftainship in 1963. Founded, the multi-racial Democratic Party in 1962. After winning a landslide victory in Bechnuanaland's first election in 1965, Seretse Khama became the country's first president. A year later he went on to become the first President of Botswana (1966-80).
