Sir Brian Edward Urquhart
(1919-2021), Under-Secretary-General, United Nations; MajorSitter in 1 portrait
A distinguished British internationalist who served as Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations from 1974 until his retirement in 1986. He served in the British army and military intelligence in North Africa and Europe during the Second World War. During his forty year career, Urquhart served or advised every UN Secretary-General since the organisation's inception and was widely seen as a pioneer of the modern concept of international peace-keeping. He wrote extensively on the UN system, including a biography of Dag Hammarskjold, the second UN Secretary-General and an autobiography, A Life in Peace and War.
