Philip (Phil) Hale was born in 1963 and raised in Kenya and the east coast of the USA. At the age of sixteen he was apprenticed to the painter Richard Berry and spent three years working with him. Although he is best known in the UK as a portrait painter, he has also done work for Stephen King, including an illustrated edition of Insomnia, artwork for the bands TOOL and Serafin as well as development work for Warner Brothers. Hale has expanded his portfolio to include designing chassis for racing motorcycles. He won joint second prize in the BP Portrait Award
