Born in Remsheid, Germany, Tillmans moved to London in the late 1980s. Began work as a fashion photographer for magazines such as The Face and i-D, developing his 'snapshot' aesthetic. Studied photography at Bournemouth Art College (1990-3), moving away from commercial photography. Published his books Concorde (1997) and Soldiers (1998), edited The Big Issue and in 2000 became the first photographer to win the Turner Prize. A monograph has recently been published by Phaidon to coincide with his 2003 exhibition at Tate Modern.
