Bartolomeo Pergami

(1783 or 1784-1842), Courier and consort of Queen Caroline

Sitter in 33 portraits
Employed as a servant by Caroline of Brunswick when she decided to leave England in 1814. Bartolomeo Pergami was to have a big influence on Caroline, soon becoming a secretary and taking control of her household. Travelling and being seen in public together gave rise to suspicions and strong rumours that they were involved with one another romantically. This was embarrassing for the Royal household and England because despite the couple having all but separated after the birth of their only child, she remained married to her husband, a cousin, George, Prince of Wales. Soon Pergami's mother, sister, brother and daughter were employed by the household, all staying at her house in Lake Como. Caroline of Brunswick parted with Pergami when she returned to England expecting to become Queen upon her husband George IV's coronation.
