Sitter in 5 portraits
At the age of 22 Applin went to train with the Ben Greet Shakespeare Company. He appeared in plays including in Black Tulip and Sweet Nell of Drury and as well as producing plays including Gerhart Hauptmann's Hannele. Applin's novels and plays such as Rags (1913), London Love (1926) and murder-mystery The Death Mask (1931) were hugely popular but were often criticised by the intellectual elite. A Life of Admiral Jellicoe (1914) won praise and his Philandering Angler (1948) is described as 'one of the few angling books that women might find essential reading.'
