Sandy Robert Nairne
(1953-), Former director of the National Portrait GallerySitter in 5 portraits
Sandy Nairne CBE was Director of the National Portrait Gallery from 2002 to 2015, where his achievements include seeing a marked rise in visitor figures, leading the campaign to acquire Van Dyck's self-portrait and welcoming new audiences. Nairne was previously Director of Programmes at Tate (1994-2002), working alongside Sir Nicholas Serota, in the creation of Tate Modern and the Centenary Development at Tate Britain. He has also worked at the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. He is currently Chair of the Fabric Advisory Committee of St Paul's Cathedral and of the Maggie's Art Group, and on the Board of Trustees of the National Trust.
