American rhythm and blues singer Joplin became a national star after her performance at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967. Formed the Kozmic Blues Band (1969) and the Full Tilt Boogie Band, with whom she recorded the unfinished chart-topping album Pearl (posthumously released in 1971 when it spent 51 weeks in the charts). She died of a drugs overdose in 1970.
