Henry John Lawrence Botterell (1896-2003), First World War combat pilot

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Botterell was sent to England in 1916 for civilian flying training. In 1917 enlisted with the Royal Naval Air Service and as a pilot for the RAF in 1918. Served in France and flew a variety of missions. Carried out 91 sorties in 60 days in his Sopwith Camel between June and August 1918 and brought down a German observation balloon. Served in the Second Word War. In his later years was celebrated as the last living fighter pilot of the First World War.
