Jan Morris was an acclaimed journalist, writer and historian. One of her most critically acclaimed works was the epic trilogy Pax Britannica (1968-78), about the rise and fall of the British Empire. Other works included cultural histories and portraits of cities, including Venice (1960), Oxford (1965) and Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere (2001). She first came to public attention in 1953 as James Morris, the reporter who climbed 22,000 feet up Mount Everest and broke the news that a British expedition had conquered the mountain. In 1974, she wrote a landmark memoir, Conundrum, which chronicled her transition to living openly as a trans woman.
