Alli began a career in television in 1992, co-founding 24 Hour Productions (later Planet 24 productions) with partner Charlie Parsons. Previously Director of Carlton Television from 1998-2000, Alli is a Director of Shine Entertainment Ltd, Executive Chairman of media rights company Chorion and Chairman of online fashion retailer ASOS. Alli was created a Life Peer as Baron Alli, of Norbury in the London Borough of Croydon in 1998. An active campaigner on Equality issues, Alli is also a trustee of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Chancellor of De Montfort University, Leicester.
