Margaret Forster studied History at Somerville College Oxford. Forster was a member of the BBC Advisory Committee on the Social Effects of Television (1975-7), the Arts Council Literary Panel (1978-81) and chief non-fiction reviewer for the London Evening Standard (1977-80). Her books include the novels Georgy Girl (1965), The Memory Box (1999), Over (2007); the memoirs Hidden Lives (1995) and Precious Lives (1998); and biographies of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1998) and Daphne du Maurier (1993).
