Francis Baines was born on April 11th 1917. I think this portrait was taken on a barge moored in Chelsea, where he lived for some time before his second marriage to June Hardy. The double-bass was habitually kept in a left-luggage locker at Victoria Station! He was active as a professional double-bass-player, composer, viol-player and an expert on the hurdy-gurdy. He also taught at the Royal College of Music from 1971. Francis died in Ballydehob, S.W. Ireland in the late nineties.
