Arnold Genthe (1869-1942)

German-born Genthe moved to San Francisco in 1896 to work as a tutor. He purchased his first camera and began photographing Chinatown and, deciding to remain in San Francisco, he subsequently opened a portrait studio on Sutter Street. In 1906 he photographed the aftermath of the San Francisco fire and earthquake. Genthe moved to New York in 1911 and established a portrait studio on Fifth Avenue and 46th Street. He became a frequent visitor to the White House where he photographed many dignitaries including Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson.
