Racing motorist. Thomas was one of many women who took up the sport of motor racing in the 1920s and 1930s. She was popular in racing circles and drove at Brooklands from 1928-32 . With her husband she broke the 500 mile record and was the first woman to make a lap at Brooklands at an average speed of 120 mph. In Atalanta -Women as Racing Drivers, the author SCH Davis comments that Jill Thomas '...drove like a man handling big fast cars with great verve and enthusiasm in days when women were not supposed to do these things. Yet she was essentially feminine...'
