Lt-Colonel Nicholas Tomlinson was commanding officer of the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot engaged in the siege of Chappoo during the First Anglo-China War. He was killed in action at the head of his men on 18 May 1842.
A coloured litho print of Tomlinson being carried from the field of action, by T A Prior after T Allom from a field sketch by Captain Stoddart RN, was published by Fisher Son & Co in October 1842.
