Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist of 3 portraits
Nigel Henderson was a well-established and well-respected artist of the 1950s, described by David Sylvester as 'a seminal figure in post-war British art' and 'an artist who took photographs'. His work later fell into obscurity but a revival of interest began with two exhibitions in 1977, a retrospective at Kettle's Yard, and a show at Anthony d'Offay Gallery. Further exhibitions culminated in a major touring retrospective in 2001, and the publication of a monograph Nigel Henderson: Parallel of Life and Art (2001), which covered his multi-faceted career of creating experimental works with photographs and collages, as well as taking portraits and documentary photographs in the East End.
