Mary Frances Lucas Keene
(1885-1977), Professor of AnatomySitter in 2 portraits
Keene graduated from the School of Medicine for Women in London in 1911, returning as a teacher of anatomy in 1914 and forming a lifelong attachment to the institution. Her most celebrated research concerned the nervous system of the human fetus but she is equally remembered for campaigning on behalf of the School of Medicine throughout her life. During the difficult years of World War II, she kept staff and student morale up and oversaw student evacuations from London to Aberdeen. After the anatomy department was lost to a rocket, she ensured students were transferred to other hospitals and campaigned for permanent buildings to be constructed. The first woman to be elected president of the Council of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain.
