Born in Vasteras, Sweden, Zetterling made her stage and film debuts aged sixteen. Her first major role was in the influential Swedish film Hets (Torment) (1944) with a script by Ingmar Bergman. In 1946 she was invited to Britain to appear in the film Frieda (1947). Other British films include The Bad Lord Byron (1949), The Truth About Women (1958) and Only Two Can Play (1961). Zetterling made her directorial debut with the award-winning documentary The War Game (1963) and later directed Night Games (1966) from her own novel and Scrubbers (1981).
