Dame Olga Nikolaevna Uvarov
(1910-2001), Veterinary scientistSitter in 13 portraits
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Uvarov was rescued from a Russian refugee camp, suffering from malaria and malnutrition. She was rescued by the Red Cross, who had been instructed by her uncle, the entomologist Boris Uvarov to find his family and bring them to London. Influenced by her uncle, she attended the Royal Veterinary College in London and in 1944 set up her own practice in Surrey. One of the few veterinary surgeons to be offered a position at Glaxo Laboratories and instrumental in making it one of Britain's largest animal medicine producers. The first woman to be appointed president of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1976, her achievements opened up the sector to women. Appointed CBE in 1978 and DBE in 1983.
