John Whitaker ('Jack') Straw

Appointed Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in 2001. Educated at Brentwood School, Essex and Leeds University. Straw came to prominence as the President of National Union of Students from 1969 to 1971. He was called to the Bar in 1972. From 1971 to 1974 he was a Deputy Leader of the Inner London Education Authority from 1973 to 1974. Elected MP for Blackburn in 1979. Straw was Home Secretary from 1997 to 2001.
