Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Minister for the Middle East) (2003-5). Symons was educated at Putney High School for Girls and Girton College, Cambridge and then worked for trade unions. Between 1989 and 1997 she was General Secretary of the Association of First Division Civil Servants. Symonds was created a Labour life peer in 1996. In 1999, she was appointed Minister of State for Defence Procurement.
