Michael Ondaatje

Writer and poet. Born in Sri Lanka, Ondaatje moved to England with his mother in 1954, subsequently studying at the University of Toronto and Queens University in Canada. He has written novels, memoirs and several volumes of poetry. His novel The English Patient (1992) was joint Booker Prize winner and winner of the Trillium Award. The film of the same title, directed by Anthony Minghella (1996), won nine Academy Awards including Best Film. In 2000, he was awarded the Prix Médicis, the Governor General's Award, and the Giller Prize for his novel Anil's Ghost.
