One of the largest landholders in the Punjab, Khan was also an elected member of the Council of State of India between 1924-1934. Prior to this he had served in the Somaliland War (1902-1904), the Tibet Expedition (1903-1904) and on the Western Front in 1914-1915, being Mentioned in Despatches on six occasions. During his service he was attached to the 18th King George's Own Lancers and later the 19th King George V's Own Lancers, becoming their Colonel in 1930. Khan was also an honorary aide-de-camp to both King George V and King Edward VIII.

His complete name was General Sir Nawab Malik Umar Hayat Khan Tiwana. He was father of Colonel Sir Nawab Malik Khizer Hayat Khan Tiwana, Prime Minister of Punjab before partition of India
