Miniaturist and mezzotinter, J(oseph) Flight, was the third son and youngest of five surviving children of organ builder, Benjamin Flight, by his wife, Frances. He was born at, 7, Denmark Court, Exeter Street, in the Parish of St Paul, Covent Garden, in which church he was baptised on 4 August 1776. He did not die in 1806. Works of his postdate this and in 1810 he travelled around England advertising his availability to paint portrait miniatures (see e.g. the announcement in 'Hereford Journal' for Wednesday 25 April 1810, p 3). He was committed to the King's Bench Prison for debt in 1812 but released later that year (see London Gazette 4 August 1812, Issue 16630 p. 1524; 8 August 1812, Issue 16631, p1560; 11 August 1812, Issue 16632, pp 1602-3., in which his recent addresses were given: ‘Joseph Flight, formerly of No 4, Soll Row, Hampstead Road, and late of No 3, Tavistock Street, Bedford Square, both in the county of Middlesex, artist.’).
